This will vary greatly depending on your pre operative level of fitness, the type of operation performed and the particular work you do. The following is therefore only a rough guideline.

Sub acromial Decompression 


Day case procedure

able to drive when can pull steering wheel from side to side- varies from 2 to 6 weeks

6 months+ to final result


Acromioclavicular joint excision


Day case procedure.

As above plus 6 weeks elbow below shoulder level

3 months to full range of movement

3 months to heavy lifting

 Rotator cuff repair


Day case procedure

6 weeks before driving

6 months before able to attempt overhead lifting

18 months to full result

 Shoulder replacement


May go home day after surgery

immediate gentle activity allowed

6 weeks before driving

18 months to full recovery
