Meniscal tears

Tears of the cartilage (or Meniscus) in the knee are common injuries, particularly during sporting activities.

Typically these are caused by twisting activities at the knee, for example whilst playing Squash or Football, but may occur during normal daily activity

Typical symptoms

Often get a swollen knee although this may not be noticed until some hours later, perhaps the following day.

Pain in the knee-

often specifically on one side only

Locking of the knee-

This is when the torn piece of cartilage 'jams' the knee. Usually this results in being able to bend the knee but not fully straighten it.

Giving way of the knee

Treatment options

Physio, rest, ice , elevation

Painkillers,

Steroid injection

Arthroscopy and resection (cutting out) of torn meniscus
